Aim

  • The aim of the Geology undergraduate program is to equip students with the fundamental knowledge of the diverse fields of Geology like Petrology & Earth history, Geomorphology & surface processes, Hydrology & Geochemistry; Tectonics & Solid earth processes etc. In addition, it is critical that students learn to think like a scientist and to apply the scientific method in their coursework and in their lives.

OBJECTIVE :

  • The objective of Geology undergraduate programme is to make students understand the basic knowledge and skills to identify, describe and classify earth materials, formations and structures and to interpret them in a context of geological processes, solve the geological problems, analysis and report quantitative geological data collected in fields and laboratory.

G.C.C-1: EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE

Course outcome: The course offers an insight into the process of formation of planet earth, meteorites asteroids and solar system. The concept of geotectonics, earthquake, volcanoes, and process of formation of soil are also other features of this paper.

Learning outcome: After the completion of course, students will possess the knowledge and skills about the existence of planet earth and movement of earth’s structures etc.

G.C.C-2: MINERAL SCIENCE

Course outcome: This course aims to provide knowledge on the structural, chemical and physical characteristics of minerals, teach the identification of the common rock forming minerals and demonstrate how minerals make up different rocks like igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary etc.

Learning outcome: On the completion of the course the student should be able to identify different minerals during the field study and in laboratory taking in aspects of all other course structures.

G.C.C-3: ELEMENTS OF GEOCHEMISTRY

Course outcome: The course aims to give an introduction how different chemical principles are used to explain the mechanisms that control the large geological systems such as the earth’s mantle, crust, oceans and atmosphere and formation of the solar system.

Learning outcome: On completion of the course the student can describe the complete of different earth reservoirs fractionations of isotopes to understand the various geochemical processes, dating of rock, source of rock, minerals, fluids etc. REE and trace element diagrams to obtain information about formation environment of volcanic rocks.

G.C.C-4: STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY

Course outcome: This paper aim to provide knowledge about identification, causes and process of formation of different earths structures like fold, fault, joints, unconformities etc. as well as methods to interpret their sub-surface dimensions precisely.

Learning outcome: On successfully completion of the course, the students will have the knowledge and skills to recognise, map and interpret the geological structures and their application in mining, resource exploration activities.

G.C.C-5: IGNEOUS PETROLOGY

Course outcome: This papers deal with the study of different igneous rocks in term of their source, texture, structure and mineralogy as well as their evolution history with the help of different crystal –melts phase diagram.

Learning outcome: At the end of the course the student will be able to identify the rock forming minerals of igneous rocks in both hand specimens and thin section, the texture and microstructures with in it and assigning a name to it.

G.C.C-6: SEDIMENTARY PETROLOGY

Course outcome: The purpose of this paper is to give a broad understanding of process of formation of sedimentary rocks, their identifications in field and laboratory, classification and nomenclature as well as interpretation of their formations environment and application in exploration activities.

Learning outcome: On completion of course student will be able to interpret the environment of burial of sediments by identifying it and other aspects.

G.C.C-7: PALAEONTOLOGY

Course outcome: This paper deals with the study of fossils which give insights to their process of preservation, origin, diversity and evolution through time and application in solving historical problems on earth.

Learning outcome: At the end of course, the students will have the skills on identification of fossils, palaeoecology, palaeobiology, palaeobiogeography, biostatigraphy and paleontological taxonomy.

G.C.C-8: METAMORPHIC PETROLOGY

Course outcome: This paper provides a basic knowledge about the processes involved in formation of metamorphic rocks, their identification and uses in protolith determination.

Learning outcome: The student should be able to identify metamorphic rock in hand specimen and their minerals in thin section also and they can apply mineralogical data to thermo barometry, the P-T condition of their formation environment .

G.C.C-9: STRASTIGRAPHIC PRINCIPLES & INDIAN STRATIGRAPHY

Course outcome: This course is to familiarize the students with the principle and technique of historical geology to have a broad picture of litho succession of earth as well as inferring about their similarities and differences in age, fossil content, structures and environment etc.

Learning outcome: Simply the students will be able to understand the evolution history of the earth through time and can apply them for solving different earth related problems.

G.C.C-10: HYDROGEOLOGY

Course outcome: This paper deals with the study of processes involved in movement of ground water, their physical, chemical parameters with its management for betterment of human kind.

Learning outcome: At the end of course, student will have a broad idea about the source of ground water and can implement for restoration of it for future uses.

G.C.C-11: ECONOMIC GEOLOGY

Course outcome: This course covers the distribution, geological setting and genesis of different ore forming minerals along with their linkage with many geological processes.

Learning outcome: On satisfying the requirement of this course, students will be have to the knowledge and skills to recognise common ore minerals in hard specimen and under the microscope, as well as they can demonstrate familiarities with a wide range of mineral deposits in terms of geometry, zonation, alteration pattern and rock associations.

G.C.C-12: GEOMORPHOLOGY

Course outcome: This course looks at the relationship between processes and land forms at a variety of scale in space and time.

Learning outcome: After completing this course, students should possess the following skills and knowledge as,

1. A broad knowledge of the scope and main areas of geomorphology

2. Ability to classify and describe land forms at a variety of environmental settings.

3. Ability to quantitatively use and evaluate geomorphological data with numerical, statistical and cartographical method to solve the geological problems.

G.C.C-13: REMOTE SENSING AND GIS

Course outcome: This course aims to give the students an overview of principle and techniques and application of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS).

Learning outcome: At the end of course the student will be able to,

1. Analyse the principle and component of photogrammetry and remote sensing.

2. Describe the process of data acquisition and processing to obtain information.

3. Identify the various land form and rocks looking at the images.

G.C.C-14: ENGINEERING GEOLOGY

Course outcome: The course is an introduction to basic concept of engineering properties of earth materials for building different earth structure like dams, tunnels, bridge, reservoirs, roads etc.

Learning outcome: After completion of course students will be able to,

1. Analyse geological parameters important in geotechnical studies .

2. To establish and describe topographical and geological sections.

3. Identifying potential geological hazards and various structures and ways of preventing and dealing with them.
